Location -> Scisciano, province of Naples, Campania
Who it is aimed atThe project plans to set up a carpentry workshop for 12 minors aged 14 to 18, at the “Jonathan” education centre, in which a youth worker-tutor and a carpentry expert will teach the children an ancient craft originating from the Campania region, thus stimulating creative and manual abilities and encouraging group work. The project also involves renovation of the entire Jonathan centre which has been operating since 1993, housing up to 8 minors sent by the local government or criminal system due to abandonment and difficulties often associated with problematic family situations.
What it involvesIn the Campania region, the need has arisen to tackle the malaise caused by social, economic and cultural disintegration together with a shortage of legal employment opportunities, creating a social fabric vulnerable to forms of juvenile delinquency. Following analysis of the situation and of the methods of taking action, Oliver Twist has financed a project for minors removed from their natural families by order of the regional social services and the Juvenile Criminal Court.
PartnerThe Jonathan non-profit social organisation is one of the region’s main organisations in the field of foster care. It was founded in 1993 and has three residential centres in Campania. It has run important projects in the field of juvenile crime prevention and rehabilitation, in which it helped children accommodated in its centres to find work. For strategic reasons, it was decided that the Jonathan association would operate in a municipality of the province of Naples that is not especially affected by social difficulties in order to offer an alternative and better life to the children it accommodates. This was also made possible thanks to the support of the area’s local government and social services.
